Determing "age appropriate" sf/fantasy content

Determing "age appropriate" sf/fantasy content

I get asked occasionally by parents if my book Accidents Happen is appropriate for teenagers or preteens. I usually say 'no' or 'maybe you should read it first' but since I don't have teenagers, I don't really know. What they have on television is way worse than anything that appears in my book but I haven't found a good gauge for determining "age appropriateness'. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Same issue

I just published my novel and got struck with this same dilemma. Where does it sit? Now I tell readers it is for mature teenagers. It's the best answer I could come up with. Hope that gives you something to tell your fans.

I was asked if there was sexual content in my book, and although it isn't explicit content there is suggestive content. So I answered yes to the question. Figured that was the safest route to take. Or PG13 I guess would cover our rears so to speak.

Regarding how to rate your book for teen readers.

Most teens I feel now days are looking for sexual content or romance even in horror books, I guess blood and gore would also have to be rated PG13 as well. With regards to Vampire books and werewolves, or anything else in the horror category. I'm like you, they allow so much on tv anymore I wouldn't think anything would be shocking now days.
