How To Promote Without Breaking The Bank

How to Promote your book without breaking a bank

by Bernice Angoh

There are a tons of ways to market yourself and your book without breaking the bank.
I specifically wrote 'market yourself' because I believe that you and your book are one.

Start with yourself. You have to work on your appearance, dress like you're going to meet someone everywhere you go. You don't want to be the author with unkempt hair, torn pants and bad breath when you meet someone you can introduce your book to. People sometimes judge a book by its cover, in that instance, you are your book and your book is you.

Believe that you have a great book that everyone should read and it will show, have doubt and people can 'smell' that too.

Vistaprint is a great resource for Logos, business cards, flyers and postcards. Make them elegant and please always add a picture, if not, your card comes out with their logo on the back and you're not an amatuer are you? I didn't think so.

Make sure your names, websites and title of your book are spelled out correctly, and do use glossy, it is more eye catching and looks better. Pick a clour that looks more like the one on your book.
1- Create a website.
2- create an email signature, include your book's title and your website.
3- Write reviews for others
4- Create blogs
5-Write and submit to anthologies
6- Write articles
7- Have a newsletter
8- Hang out at amazon.com and get free resources on how to market your book
9-Get names, contacts, numbers and promote, promote, promote
10- don't forget Thank you cards
11- Keep writing!

Good common sense article. As a follow-up you might want to talk about timescales. I've only just agreed the artwork for my first novel and yet I've had a blog running for nearly four months. I've spent three months developing a detailed and professional-looking website which isn't even open for public viewing yet and I'm now heavily engaged in many of the other items on your list and release date is still six months off.

What goes into a website would also be a good topic. I've seen some awful sites in my travels that do nothing to promote either the author or their product.

Great points!

Thanks Bernice! Very Information article.

I have utilized Vistaprint with much success as well as a number of your stated points.

E book author interested in promoting.

That last e mail was very helpful.

I'm Susie Hawes, the author of 9 books, 6 of which are published in e book format by renaissance e books (www.renebooks.com) PageTurner editions. The following three books will be coming out in 2008.

I'm also connected to Whispering Spirits digital magazine. They are running a contest/fundraiser right now. I'll be a reader for them.

One great place to announce your speculative fiction onvel is Expressions newsletter. It's free, and the lady who runs it, Cathy Buburuz, is a cool person, and an author/artist/editor.

Superb Article

This is a recap of most all that I presently do. Let it be known that it does take time, but it's also some of the best publicity you can find. You will get back what you put into it and you may be surprised as well.

Directories

Do not overlook placing your website and/or blog in as many search engines and directories as you can find. Here's a new directory for self published authors http://bestselfpublished.com. You would be amazed at how many people search for one thing and end up finding another and purchasing. Our society contains a lot of impulse buying.

Local merchants

I have convinced several local merchants who don't sell books to put my new book We The People on display. I bought a dish holder to lean the book up and placed a card holder beside it containing a bunch of my self-printed business cards.

What I hope from this is to get my cards out there and generate traffic to my website. They will have already seen my book and perhaps browsed the pages.

If this works, I will canvas more merchants.

You don't want merchants that sell books(competition), or have cluttered counter tops, or want a 'cut' of the action. I have mine in my hair salon, in front of my hair lady. Another is placed at the pizza parlour where I go to pick up once a week. Another is at the computer store where I shop. Finally, the Cancer Society office, as my book is donated to them.
