Benson’s Race, a new book by Marilyn Clements, tells the story of Benson, a Siberian Husky, who wants to be a racer. Giving up puppy parties and other puppy pleasures to work out on his treadmill is the first of many lessons he learns on his long road to lead Husky. When his youthful exuberance results in a sled crash, he learns about responsibility too. But it’s during the actual race that Benson discovers that not everyone is as honest as his trainer. While crossing a dangerous stretch, Benson leaves the pack to go after Rosie, a red-furred husky dognapped by Zelda, the evil musher. Can Benson save her? And will rescuing her cost him the race? Addressing family, work ethics, responsibility, and tolerance of others, this touching, yet action-packed story teaches valuable lessons we all must learn. The characters come alive through magnificent illustrations. Benson’s Race is recommended for fourth through sixth graders, but is wonderful for reading to younger children as well.
