Description

First in a series of 5 novels based on my own free translation of Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic Wars. The story unfolds through the eyes of a young nobleman, born into the privileged circle of friends and relations of the great man himself - a man with all the outward trappings of power, but there is a twist to the tale. It is also the story of a very modern army officer blown up on a modern battlefield who comes to on a very different field, with a very different army, 2000 years in the past in the exciting times of Julius Caesar, a man determined to bring the venal, oligarchy that is the Roman Senate, kicking and screaming, out of its fascination with its City State origins and into touch with its destiny as the seat of Empire. Put aside the prejudice and propaganda of historians and see it as it was. Background notes are provided for those brought up on tales of the Roman Empire under Augustus and his many corrupt successors, yet unfamiliar with the facts of Republican Rome’s very different lifestyle, and what led up to its demise.
