This is a chilling account of ground combat of a young company-grade officer who fought with the 9th Infantry Division in North Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium, and Germany. Scheffel vividly recalls the terror, mind-numbing fatigue, raw emotions, and horrific conditions fighting men endured to achieve victory in World War II. A star athlete at Oklahoma A&M, Charles Scheffel entered the U.S Army as a 2nd lieutenant after graduation in 1942. During his military service, he earned the combat infantry badge, two purple hearts, the bronze and silver stars, and the French Croix de Guerre. After extended stays in various military and veterans hospitals, he retired in January 1946 from disabilities caused by wounds suffered at Siegfried Line fortifications along the German-Belgium border. Mark Reardon, U.S. Army historian and author of Victory at Mortain, has written: "Fortunately for us, Charlie has decided to share his experiences with modern day readers. His story is unique, dramatic, and exceedingly well-written. I highly recommend Crack! and Thump to anyone with even a passing interest in World War II."
