Still feeling guilty about the death of the choirmaster Katherine leaves her Hudson River village to spend New Year's Eve in Santa Fe with her friend, Lars. When she arrives he's gone and neither of his children know where he might be. Though worried, Katherine spends the night in his home. She is awakened by a phone call from the hospital. Lars is there. She brings him home and learns he was kidnapped and escaped. Days later his daughter is kidnapped in the same manner. Katherine wonders what is going on. As the days pass with no solution to the puzzle. She fears for Lar's life. When his son-in-law is shot Katherine must discover who, what and why before she loses her friend and the man she has come to love.
