Biography

KarlaBrandenburg.com

Before I had even reached the age of 10, Simon and Schuster received my first writing endeavor, a children’s book (naturally). I was easily fascinated by typewriters, first the manual, then the old electric that my mother brought home from work, going through ribbons and using up paper while I made up stories. When my mother handed me my first Victoria Holt book to read, I wanted to write just like her, but as I grew older, I realized I had a more contemporary voice.

Drawing on journalism classes in high school, the school newspaper, and college writing courses, I decided it was time to focus my fiction writing. With the influences of Stephen King and Rod Serling, I discovered a supernatural element creeping into my stories, just enough to add suspense without stretching imagination too far. A romantic at heart, I always find myself wondering about that dream I had last night . . . or did I just imagine hearing someone on a train or seeing something in a painting that everybody else missed?

Inspiration

I am inspired by people and places and things. My first novel, The Treasure of St. Paul, is a grail novel (before Dan Brown, I might add) because I have this thing for King Arthur, et al., and also I am intrigued by Pompeii. Imagine my delight when I found a parallel that brought the two together!

My current novel, Living Canvas, is based on my experiences with the charm of B&B's. That and a piece of laser art that I own that I bought because I felt a part of the landscape . . .

Intimate Distance? Haven't you ever met someone you clicked with online?

I think that encompasses people, places and things - well, you get the idea.
